Creature from the Black Lagoon 1954 Review

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Creature from the Black Lagoon 1954

  • Glenn Strange, who played the Frankenstein Monster in many of Universal’s classic horror films, was approached to play the Creature from the Black Lagoon. However, Strange declined the offer as swimming wasn’t his strong suit.
  • Two different costumes were built for the Creature – one for swimming shots and one for on land.
  • The film was originally made to be shown in 3D, however the 3D fad was dying out by the time the Creature from the Black Lagoon was released, so it was rarely shown in theatres other than in 2D.
  • Two actors/stuntmen played the creature – Ricou Browning played the character for the underwater scenes and Ben Chapman was the Gill Man on land. The two actors never came into contact during film, and only met 20 years later at a convention.
  • The film premiered in London’s West End in December 1954. Despite the film’s cult status, the film only last three weeks.
